Inhabited external islands
Christmas Island is administered from Flying Fish Cove; Cocos (Keeling) from West Island; Norfolk from Kingston. Their local names, communities and public services continue within the national framework. Territorial status does not remove their parliamentary representation.
Reef groups
Ashmore and Cartier and the Coral Sea Islands retain separate registers. They do not have permanent civilian capitals. Responsible territorial offices and attached lawful personnel supply administration and representation. Enlarged map markers indicate location rather than the true land area of a reef or island.
Southern islands
Heard and McDonald support remote observation and communications under southern administration. Macquarie belongs to Tasmania and is not a separate federal territory. Lord Howe belongs to New South Wales, including its surrounding island group. The atlas shows both at their true locations.
Antarctic sector
The Australian Antarctic Territory spans the retained sector from 45°E to 160°E south of 60°S, excluding Adélie Land from 136°E to 142°E. Mawson, Davis and Casey provide station functions; Hobart and Kingston provide responsible national administration. The sector is shown as a claim with treaty qualifications. It is not counted as universally recognised sovereign land.
Associated New Zealand islands
Chatham and the recognised outlying New Zealand island groups are administered through the Federal Pacific District, with a secretariat at Wellington. Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau are not silently annexed by a cartographic label. Their relationships require separate constitutional decisions where not specified in the union instrument.
